General Electric's 747-121 powerplant testbed, N747GE (c/n 19651, l/n 25), is in town today. It arrived from VCV, and parked on the North Ramp.
19651 was originally delivered to Pan American Airways in June 1972 as N744PA. It was named "Clipper Ocean Spray", and served with PAA until 1991. GE acquired the 747-121 in December 1991, and received its current registration in March 1992.

Do you know what engine it has bolted to the the #2 position for test?
ReplyDeleteIt recently finished testing a GEnx engine. It should have its JT9D in place at #2...I believe it is headed to Hong Kong for scheduled maintenance. It will soon be replaced by a 747-400 which previously saw service for JAL.
ReplyDeleteIt looked like it had a JT9D in the #2 from the H1 West on-ramp. It left for GUM this morning.
ReplyDeleteSeeing pictures of this rig with the GEnx mounted on it reminded me of how they originally tested the JT9D on a B-52E.
