USDOT Approves Allegiant / Sun Country Merger

The US Department of Transportation gave approval for the merger between Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines to proceed, with an expected closing date in mid-May. The two carriers will operate separately until a single operating certificate is obtained some time within the next 14 months.

With both airlines operating separately, it remains to be seen if Sun Country will fly Mountain West football teams to HNL for road games against the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors for the 2026 season.

Allegiant Airlines To Acquire Sun Country Airlines

Allegiant Airlines and Sun Country Airlines announced today that the former will acquire the latter in a cash and stock deal valued at over US$1.5B. This newly combined airline is subject to government regulations, then a single operating certificate under Allegiant's name, and headquartered in Las Vegas. Both airlines will continue to operate until the merger is approved.

Allegiant is currently adding the 737-8-200 to its fleet, with an initial order of 50 737-7s and 737-8-200s, with an option  for an additional 50, in January 2022. Currently, Allegiant as 16 737-8-200s in service, among its fleet of 127 airliners. In October 2023, the airline added an additional options for 80 more 737MAX. These 737MAXs will be replacing their Airbus A319-100 and A320-200s. Allegiant used to fly from HNL to LAS (then other cities) using 757-200s from 2012 to 2016.

Sun Country Airlines has a fleet of 68 737NGs, 65 737-800s and 3 737-900ERs. The airline does fly to HNL for college football charters for some of the Mountain West Conference opponents. Sun Country also has a twice-weekly charter flight between LAX and KOA as SCX8501/8502, with its VIP cabin-configured N839SY. The Minneapolis-based airline also has a subfleet of 20 737-800Fs flying for Amazon Prime Air. Sun Country also has two more 737-900ERs that have yet to be delivered from their purchase from Oman Air.

Utah State Aggies' Team Charter

The Utah State Aggies football team is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for their road trip from LGU to HNL, via OAK, to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors. N821SY (c/n 39952, l/n 5217, f/n 821) is flying the Aggies as SCX8411. It will remain at HNL to take the team back to LGU following the game.

The flights were scheduled to arrive yesterday, but was delayed to today. SCX8411 is due to arrive around 12:45HAST

12 October 2025 UPDATE 

The Aggies departed after midnight following their 44-26 loss. N821SY is returning to LGU, via OAK, as SCX8411.

Sun Country Airlines' N839SY

Sun Country Airlines' N839SY (c/n 42083, l/n 6232) is making a stop at HNL from LAX as SCX8670, and parking on the South Ramp. This 737-8JP normally operates the Sun Country service between LAX and KOA, and only wears the Sun Country logo on the tail with a modified livery.

N839SY is returning to LAX as SCX8671 today, and scheduled to continue onto SLC as SCX8672.

Sun Country Airlines' N901SY

Sun Country Airlines is taking delivery of their first 737-91MER, N901SY (c/n 40069, l/n 5150). It's making its delivery flight from CGK to MZJ, via GUM and JRF. It will be given the fleet number 901. N901SY will make an overnight stop at JRF tonight.

This the first of five former Oman Air 737-91MERs to be acquired by Sun Country Airlines. It will be put into short-term storage at MZJ, and not known when it will be inducted into service.

Nov 2014: Delivered to Oman Air as A4O-BI, under lease from OBALC.

Sep 2017: Sold to GOAL, and the lease transferred.

Apr 2023: Sold to Sun Country Airlines, and the lease transferred.

Aug 2024: Withdrawn from service, and ferried to CGK for storage.

New Mexico Lobos Team Charter

The New Mexico Lobos football team is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for their road game against the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. N801SY (c/n 30332, l/n 777, f/n 801) is flying the Lobos from ABQ to HNL, via OAK, as SCX8420. The team will return to AB following the game.

Air Force Academy Falcon's Team Charter

The US Air Force Academy Falcons football team is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for their road trip to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. N821SY (c/n 39952, l/n 5217, f/n 821) is flying the Falcons from COS to HNL, via OAK, as SCX8607.

The team will return to COS following Saturday's game with the same flight code.

N821SY also flew in the San José State Spartans two weeks ago.

San José State Spartans Team Charter

The San José State Spartans is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 today, for their road trip to Honolulu to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. N821SY (c/n 39952, l/n 5217, f/n 821) is flying the Spartans from SJC to HNL, as SCX8603.

The Spartans will return to SJC following the game with the same flight number.

San Diego State Aztecs Team Charter

The San Diego State Aztecs is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for their road trip to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday, flying as SCX8611. N801SY (c/n 30332, l/n 777, f/n 801) is flying from SAN today, and will arrive this afternoon.

The Aztecs will return to SAN following their 41-31 win over the Rainbow Warriors.

New Mexico State Aggies Team Charter

The New Mexico State Aggies chartered a Sun Country 737-800 for their road trip to HNL for Saturday's game against the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors. N801SY (c/n 30332, l/n 777, f/n 801) is bringing the Aggies today from ELP (via ONT) as SCX8409. This 737-8Q8 will remain for the duration of the road trip. It was repainted late last year in the current livery.

The Aggies will return to ELP, via ONT, following their last-second 20-17 loss to the Rainbow Warriors, as SCX8409.

Kona Express

Sun Country Airlines has teamed up with an undisclosed group to charter a weekly roundtrip flight between LAX and KOA. The flight, SCX8501/8502 runs on Sundays, with an additional flight on alternating Thursdays. The service began last month with VIP cabin-configured N839SY (c/n 42083, l/n 6232), a 737-8JP, exclusively flying the route.

42083's History:

Jan 2017: Delivered to Norwegian Air International as EI-FVH, with the Jean Sebelius tail livery, and under lease from Jackson Square Aviation.

Dec 2019: Subleased to Norwegian Air Sweden as SE-RRZ.

Mar 2020: Withdrawn from service, and stored at ARN.

Dec 2020: Ferried to CQM for storage.
Apr 2021: Ferried to PAE for storage and VIP cabin configuration.

May 2021: Leased to Sun Country Airlines as N839SY.

Utah State's Team Charter

The Utah State Aggies chartered a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for their road trip to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. N821SY (c/n 39952, l/n 5217, f/n 821), a 737-8FH, is flying from SLC to HNL (via OAK) today, as SCY8441. The Aggies should be returning to SLC following the game.

University of Wyoming Team Charter

The University of Wyoming Cowboys football team is chartering a Sun Country Airlines 737-800 for its road trip game to play the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors. N820SY (c/n 39951, l/n 5166, f/n 820) is flying the team from LAR to HNL (via OAK), as SCX8420. The Cowboys will return to LAR Sunday morning.

Colorado State Rams' Team Charter

The Colorado State Rams football team has chartered Sun Country Airlines' 737-8FHs for its road trip to play the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. N820SY (c/n 39951, l/n 5166, f/n 820) is making the trip from FNL [Northern Colorado Regional Airport, Fort Collins, CO] to HNL, via OAK as SCX8605.

The return leg to take the Rams back to FNL will be flown by N821SY (c/n 39952, l/n 5217, f/n 821), which repositioned on Friday from OAK. 820 was assigned to SFO as SCX394 after dropping off the Rams.

The San Diego State Aztecs football team has chartered Sun Country Airlines' N820SY (c/n 39951, l/n 5166, f/n 820) for their road trip to face the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. The team arrives from SAN, this afternoon aboard SCX8614, and will depart a few hours following the game as SCX8615.
