30 Years Of 777 Service

This week the Boeing 777 celebrates 30 years of service. Hawai‘i has seen its share of most of the 777 variants from a variety of airlines.

Eastern Airlines' N825KW

Eastern Airlines' 777-212ER, N825KW (c/n 32318, l/n 445), is making a stop from YYC tonight as EAL3501. N825KW made a stop here this past January.

Eastern Airlines' 777-212ER, N825KW (c/n 32318, l/n 441), is making a stop at HNL from LSV [Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV] as EAL9074.

Jun 2003: Delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SRN.

Jun 2008: Sold to Pembroke, and leased back.

Mar 2015: Withdrawn from service.

Jun 2015: Ferried to VCV for storage, and re-registered as EI-FLE.

Jly 2017: Leased to FlyGlobal as 9M-FGB.

Sep 2018: Withdrawn from service, and stored at KUL.

May 2020: Ferried to MZJ for storage.

Apr 2021: Acquired by Jet Midwest as N825KW.

Aug 2021: Transferred to Alta Airlines Holdings.

May 2023: Leased to Eastern Airlines.

24 January 2025 UPDATE

N825KW departed for KOA as EAL3043, and returned to HNL as  EAL9044. It made a second flight to KOA as EAL3044.

25 January 2025 UPDATE

N825KW returned to HNL as EAL9045, and flew to KOA as EAL3045.

29 January 2025 UPDATE

N825KW departed KOA for GUM this afternoon as EAL9101.

The Hawai‘i Bowl Team Charters

The two teams participating in the 2024 edition of The Hawai‘i Bowl are the University of South Florida Bulls from the American Athletic Conference (Tampa, FL) and the San José State Spartans from the Mountain West Conference (San José, CA). Both teams will be arriving by their respective team charter flights.

The game is scheduled to be played at the Clarence TC Ching Field on the campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, on 24 December, at 15:00HAST. Both teams will return to their respective cities following the game.

Bulls Charter Flight from TPA to HNL (18 Dec 2024):

American Airlines 777-223ER N759AN (c/n 32836, l/n 376, f/n 7BU) as AAL9735 [Team].

Omni Air International 767-36NER N468AN (c/n 30115, l/n 863) as OAE2851 [Band & Cheer].

 It ferried to ITO for the duration of bowl week.

Spartans Charter Flight from SJC (19 Dec 2024):

Omni Air International 777-2U8ER N819AX (c/n 33681, l/n 479) as OAE2859.

24 December 2024 UPDATE

The Bulls are returning to TPA on American Airlines' 777-223ER, N759AN, as AAL9841, following their five overtime 41-39 win. Omni's N468AX will take back the USF band and cheerleaders back to TPA as OAE2868.

The Spartans are returning to SJC on Omni Air International's 777-2U8ER, N828AX (c/n 33682, l/n 514) as OAE2864.

United Airlines' Fantasy Flight

The HNL Station for United Airlines hosted a Fantasy Flight for children battling life-threatening illness, special needs, and children from Gold Star families and fallen heroes today. N774UA (c/n 26936, l/n 2, f/n 2474), a 777-222, made the 50-minute flight from HNL's Gate F2 to the United's Hangar, as UAL3894. United employees, along with several non-profit organizations, volunteered their time to make this annual flight happen. UAL3894 landed on Runway 8R, and taxied to their hangar, where there was a Christmas party for the children and their families.

UAL 3894 was the first of the 13 Fantasy Flights around United's global network, this Christmas season. The other 12 cities hosting Fantasy Flights are: NRT, GUM, LAX, SFO, DEN, ORD, CVG, IAH, IAD, EWR, FLL, and LHR.

Eastern Airlines' 777-212ER, N771KW (c/n 28530, l/n 390), is making a stop at HNL from MCI as EAL9832.  It will continue onto GUM as EAL9833 tomorrow.

Mar 2002: Delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SQI, under lease from Pembroke.

Apr 2017: Leased to FlyGlobal as 9M-FGA.

Nov 2017: Subleased to Nesma Airlines for one month.

May 2020: Purchased by Eastern Airlines as N771KW.

Nov 2022: Inducted into service.

May 2024: Leased to Garuda Indonesia for two months.

21 November 2024 UPDATE

N771KW is arriving from ANC tonight as EAL9835, and will continue onto MCI tomorrow as EAL9836.

UCLA Bruins Team Charter

The UCLA Bruins football team chartered a United Airlines 777-222ER for their road game versus the Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors on Saturday. The Bruins flew aboard N222UA (c/n 30553, l/n 352, f/n 2822) from LAX to HNL as UAL3802.

N222UA will reposition to fly as UAL252 to IAH. A different 777 will pick up the team following the game.

The Bruins will leave this afternoon to return to LAX aboard N781UA (c/n 26945, l/n 40, f/n 2481) as UAL3802.

Hawai‘i Bowl Team Charters

The 2023 edition of the Easypost Hawai‘i Bowl features the matchup of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, from the Sun Belt Conference (Conway, South Carolina) and the San José State Spartans, from the Mountain West Conference (San José, California). Both teams are arriving today via Omni Air International from their respective cities.

The game is scheduled for Saturday, 23 Dec 2023, 17:30HAST, at the Clarence TC Ching Field, on the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus. Both teams will return following the bowl game, with both aircraft will stay to the teams home.

Chanticleers Charter Flight:

Omni Air International 777-2U8ER N819AX (c/n 33681, l/n 479), from MYR to HNL as OAE1639.

Spartans Charter Flight:

Omni Air International 767-36NER N468AX (c/n 30115, l/n 863), from SJC to HNL as OAE1644.

23 Dec 2023 UPDATE

The Chanticleers held off a late Spartans rally to take the Easypost Hawai‘i Bowl trophy with a 24-14 win.

The return flights are OAE1651: HNL-MYR; and OAE1650: HNL-SJC.

Japan Airlines' JA771J

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA771J (c/n 27656, l/n 437) from HND to MHV, via HNL, as JAL8132. This OneWorld-liveried 777-246, is being retired, and will be parted out, then scrapped.

May 2003: Delivered to Japan Airlines, in the "Arc of the Sun" livery.

Aug 2005: "JAL Family Jet" decal applied, lasted until December.

Apr 2007: "Book First" decals, lasted for one year.

May 2009: Painted as a "OneWorld" logo jet.

Dec 2012: Remains as a "OneWorld" logo jet, but with "Tsurumaru" logo.

Feb 2021: Withdrawn from service, and stored at HND.

Japan Airlines' JA007D

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA007D (c/n 27639, l/n 134) from HND to VCV, via HNL. This 777-289, flying as JAL8132, being retired after 24 years of service.

Apr 1998: Delivered to Japan Air Service in the Akira Kurosawa livery.

Apr 2004: Integrated as Japan Airlines Domestic.

May 2006: Painted in the Tamagotchi special livery.

Oct 2006: Integrated to the Japan Airlines fleet.

Aug 2012: Painted in the current livery.

JA708A

JA708A (c/n 28277, l/n 278), a former All Nippon Airways 777-281ER, is ferrying from HND to MHV, via HNL, as ANA9431. It will be placed into storage at MHV.

This 777-281ER was delivered to ANA in May 2000, and was withdrawn from service in February 2021.

Japan Airlines' JA009D

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA009D (c/n 27641, l/n 159) from NGO to VCV, via HNL. Sadly, this 777-289, flying as JAL8132, is due to be parted out and scrapped.

Sep 1998: Delivered to Japan Air System (JAS) in the Akira Kurosawa livery.

Apr 2004: Acquired by Japan Airlines Domestic, and painted into the "Arc of the Sun" livery.

Jly 2006: Painted in the Tamagotchi special livery.

Jun 2010: Special decals for the Softbank Hawks NPB baseball team added for 1 month.

N830KW (c/n 30870, l/n 374), a former Singapore Airlines 777-212ER is making its ferry flight from ASP to MCI (via BNE and HNL). It's due to arrive in the overnight hours. This "Triple" is most-likely bound for Eastern Airlines.

30870's History:

Nov 2001: Delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SVE.

Mar 2020: Withdrawn from service.

Apr 2020: Ferried to ASP for storage.

Nov 2021: Acquired by Jet Midwest.

Japan Airlines' JA8979

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA8979 (c/n 27638, l/n 107) from NGO to VCV, via HNL, as JAL8132. This 777-289 is being retired by JAL, and is headed for storage.

Nov 1997: Delivered to Japan Air System, in the Akira Kurosawa livery.

Apr 2004: Transferred to Japan Airlines fleet, after JAS was acquired by JAL.

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA773J (c/n 27653, l/n 635) from NGO to VCV (via HNL), as JAL8130. This 777-246, wearing the “Tokyo 2020 / Fly For It” special livery, has been sold to an undisclosed buyer.

May 2007: Delivered to Japan Airlines.

Apr 2019: Painted in the “Tokyo 2020 / Fly For It” special livery.

Feb 2021: Withdrawn from service, and stored at OKA.

N829KW

N829KW (c/n 28526, l/n 355), a 777-212ER acquired for Eastern Airlines by Jet Midwest, is making its way from ASP to MCI, via BNE and HNL. It's making an overnight stop at HNL tonight, and is still wearing the Singapore Airlines livery.

Aug 2001: Originally delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SVC.

Aug 2010: Leased to Royal Brunei Airlines as V8-BLE.

Aug 2012: Returned to Singapore Airlines.

N826KW (c/n 28521, l/n 330), a former NokScoot 777-212, is making a ferry flight from ASP [Alice Spings, Australia] to MCI, via BNE and HNL. It was acquired by Jet Midwest for delivery to Eastern Airlines.

Mar 2001: Originally delivered to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SRF.

Jul 2014: Transferred to their NokScoot subsidiary as HS-XBA "Proud".

Aug 2020: Returned to Singapore Airlines as 9V-SRF.

Aug 2021: Acquired by Jet Midwest as N826KW.

American Airlines To Add CLT-HNL

American Airlines is going to restart the old short-lived US Airways service between CLT and HNL from May to September 2021. The seasonal six-times-per-week service will be flown with 777-200ERs.

In December 2009, US Airways launched daily service between CLT and HNL. The service lasted for about two years.

Air Canada Flight Diverted To HNL

Severe turbulence and over 30 injured passengers and crew on an Air Canada flight from YVR to SYD, that caused it to divert to HNL. ACA33, flown by a 777-233ER, C-FNNH (c/n 35247, l/n 699, f/n 706), encountered turbulence southwest of the Hawaiian Islands, and made the diversion to HNL.
