Hawaiian Airlines Ends ‘Ohana by Hawaiian

Hawaiian Airlines announced this morning that they will end their ‘Ohana by Hawaiian subsidiary instead of restarting operations. ‘Ohana's ATR42-500 passenger operations have been suspended since January, and their ATR-72-200F cargo operations have been suspended since November 2020. This will end service to Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i by Hawaiian Airlines.

The aircraft are owned by a company under the Hawaiian Holdings umbrella, and will be ferried to the Empire Airlines (the ATR's operator) base at Couer d'Alene, ID, and will be put up for sale. Sadly, the Sig Zane designed livery will disappear from our airports.

With ‘Ohana's closure, passenger service to JHM, MKK, and LNY will fall upon Mokulele Airlines, and cargo to Kamaka Air.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian Suspends Operations

With the US Department of Transportation's decision to award the non-funded Essential Air Service (EAS) contract to Mokulele Airlines for MKK and LNY, Hawaiian Airlines has suspended operations of its ‘Ohana by Hawaiian subsidiary as of today. Both Empire Airlines (who handles the ATR42 and ATR72 operations) and Hawaiian Airlines will keep a minimal staff on-hand to maintain the fleet as it sits in storage at HNL.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian To Suspend Operations

Hawaiian Airlines announced that it would suspend operations of its ‘Ohana by Hawaiian passenger and cargo services on November 1, 2020. Citing decreased demand due to the China Corona Virus pandemic, and the state's quarantine restrictions, the airline was forced to suspend operations of it subsidiary until significant demand for inter-island travel to MKK and LNY picks up.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian's N816HC

‘Ohana by Hawaiian's fourth ATR72F, N816HC (msn 389), has repositioned from SAT [San Antonio, TX] to CDL [Couer d'Alene, ID], as Empire Airlines preps it for delivery to HNL. This ATR72-201F made the flight as CFS400. It was ferried from SNN [Shannon, Ireland] to SAT via BFS [Belfast, Northern Ireland], KEF [Reykjavik, Iceland], YYR [Goose Bay Newfoundland], BGR [Bangor, ME], and DAY [Dayton, OH] from 05 March to 08 March.

389 was originally delivered to TransAsia Airways [Taiwan] in January 1994 as B-22716. In May 2007, it was acquired by Farnair Switzerland, converted to a freighter, and registered as HB-AFN. Farnair was acquired by ASL Aviation Group, and rebranded as ASL Airlines Switzerland. In January 2016, it was transferred to ASL Airlines Ireland as EI-SLT. In February 2020, this ATR72F was purchased by ‘Ohana by Hawaiian as N816HC.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian's N807HC

‘Ohana by Hawaiian is taking delivery of N807HC (msn 432) this afternoon. It's their third ATR72-212F for their inter-island cargo operation.

432 was originally delivered to BBAM, and leased to Avianova [RD/NOV] (Italy) in March 1995 as EI-CLD "Fiume Piave". In November 1996, it was transferred to Alitalia, and a year later transferred to Alitalia Express. In December 2005, it was acquired by Alitalia Express, and registered as I-ATRR. In March 2010, it was acquired by Magellan Aircraft Services. A year later, it was sold to First Air [7F/FAB] (Canada)as C-GRMZ. It was converted to a freighter in April 2012. In June 2015, it was acquired by ‘Ohana by Hawaiian, and operated by Empire Airlines.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian Launches Cargo Operations

‘Ohana by Hawaiian launched their ATR72-212F cargo operations today, with N810HC "Ala‘oli" (msn 423) making the initial flights to Hilo and Līhu‘e, to deliver relief supplies to the communities affected by the April rains (Kaua‘i), and the volcanic eruption displacements (Hawai‘i Island).

‘Ohana by Hawaiian's N810HC

‘Ohana by Hawaiian is taking delivery of their second ATR72-212F, N801HC "Ala‘oli" (msn 423) today. It's being flown in by Southern Cross Aviation as SXA463.

N810HC (msn 423) was delivered to Avianova, under leased from BBAM in February 1995 as EI-CLB "Lago di Bracciano". In December 2005, it was acquired by Alitalia Express as I-ATRO. It went to Magellan Aircraft Services in November 2010, and four months later it was sold to First Air as C-GLHR. In April 2012, it was converted to a freighter. In August 2015, it was acquired by ‘Ohana.

Aloha ʻOe N942WP

Island Air's last ATR72-212, N942WP "Paʻahana" (msn 425), began its ferry fligt from HNL to BGR (via CMA and SLN) this morning. "Paʻahana" was the last of the Island Air fleet remaining at HNL.

Island Air's N941WP Ferried

Aloha ‘oe to Island Air's N941WP "Manawanui" (msn 349), as it was ferried by Southern Cross Aviation to BGR, via CMA and SLN.

Aloha ‘Oe N943WP

Island Air is returning N943WP "Ho‘olauna" (msn 420) to its leasing company this morning. Southern Cross Aviation will ferry it from HNL to CMA as SXA418.

Aloha ‘Oe N945WP

Island Air is ferrying their second ATR72-212 to the mainland. N945WP "Hilina‘i" (msn 434) is being ferried by Southern Cross Aviation as SXA419, and its first stop is CMA.

Aloha ‘Oe N944WP

Island Air bid farewell to N944WP "Ho‘opa‘a" (msn 345) today. The ATR72-212 is being ferried to BGR [Bangor, ME], via CMA [Camarillo, CA] and SLN [Salina, KS], by Southern Cross Aviation. It left early this morning for CMA as SXA416.

‘Ohana by Hawaiian's N811HC

‘Ohana by Hawaiian is taking delivery of their first ATR72-201F, N811HC (msn 227) today. It's the first of three ATR72 freighters for the Hawaiian Airlines subsidiary.

This ATR72-201 was originally delivered to Brit Air [DB/BZH] (France) in March 1991 as F-GHPU. In January 2003, it went to Danish Air Transport [DX/DTR] (Denmark) as F-GHPU. It was leased to Air Atlantique [4Q/APB] (France) from October 2003 to July 2004. In December 2004, it was re-registered as OY-RUC. In January 2007, it was converted to a freighter, and six months later it went to West Air Europe [WLX] Luxembourg as LX-WAB. In May 2013, it was sold to Solenta Aviation, a carrier for DHL as ZS-XCF. In September 2015, ‘Ohana acquired this ATR72 for its new cargo operations.

Island Air Transitions To All Q400 Fleet

Island Air transitioned to an all-Q400 NextGen fleet today. The airline also has two more Q400 NextGens on order from Bombardier.

The five ATR72-212s have been retired, and will be returned to Island Leasing Company (Walnut Creek, CA) in the near future. The final ATR72 flight was made by N944WP, as MKU86 [KOA-HNL].

Hawaiian To Get A321neos This Year

ATW Online reports that Hawaiian Airlines is on scheduler to receive its first A321neo in October of this year, and should have at least two by the end of the year. However, they will not enter service until sometime in 2018.

Another part of the article reports that the ATR72Fs for ‘Oahan by Hawaiian, are experiencing some issues with a supplier and certification, but hopes to have this new cargo service starting in the third quarter of this year.

Island Air To Return To KOA

Island Air announced today that they will re-instate service between HNL and KOA, beginning June 14th, with five daily round-trip flights.

PacifiCap To Acquire Island Air

The Honolulu Star*Advertiser is reporting that two PacifiCap affiliates will be purchasing a controlling share of Island Air from Larry Ellison, a week after the sale was announced. Included in the article, is a plan to add a sixth ATR72.

‘Ohana To Start Cargo Division

‘Ohana by Hawaiian, the Hawaiian Airlines' subsidiary, will launch an inter-island cargo division in the first half of 2016, with three ATR72-212Fs. It will be branded with the ‘Ohana livery, and operated by Empire Airlines (as with the passenger operations). This new cargo venture will operate out of Hawai‘i's major airports, and feed inter-island, domestic, and international routes.

This is Hawaiian's second venture with freighters, as the airline had mainland-based cargo operations using L-188F Electras from the late 70s to early 80s.

On July 12th, we posted an article regarding ATR72s for ‘Ohana. Now we know what those ATRs will be used for. N807HC is the first of the three. Other registrations on hold by Hawaiian are N806HC and N810HC.

‘Ohana Acquires An ATR72

‘Ohana By Hawaiian has acquired an ATR72-212, N807HC (msn 432), and is being prepped by Empire Airlines, who operates the ATRs for ‘Ohana. It's not known, which routes ‘Ohana will use this ATR72, or if more are on order.

432 was originally purchased by Tarquin Ltd, and leased to Avianova [RD/NOV] (Italy) in March 1995 as EI-CLD "Fiume Piave". In November 1996, Alitalia and Alitalia Express [XM/SMX] acquired Avianova, and its fleet was transferred over. In December 2005, it was re-registered as I-ATRR. In March 2010, it was acquired by Magellan Aviation Services; and re-registered September 2010, back to EI-CLD. In March 2011, First Air [7F/FAB] (Canada) acquired this ATR72 as C-GRMZ. Last month, ‘Ohana by Hawaiian purchased 432 and registered it as N807HC.

Island Air Storm Suspensions

Due to Hurricane Iselle, Island Air is suspending service to OGG and LNY from HNL this afternoon, and tomorrow. Service is scheduled to resume on Saturday.
