Lack Of Firefighting Aircraft In Hawai‘i

With the five brush fires raging in Hawai‘i, two on O‘ahu's west side in Mākaha and Wai‘anae, two on Hawai‘i Island (Waikoloa and Keauhou), and one in Maui (Kula). We've been asked why there are no firefighting aircraft based in Hawai‘i? Each of the counties fire departments have helicopters, but nothing larger than an MD500 that can carry 200-300 gallon baskets. The county can request assistance from the US Army / Hawai‘i Army National Guard UH-60s.

Firebombers based on the US mainland have been assigned to fight fires in the western US.

In the case of the two O‘ahu fires, a firebomber could help the Honolulu Fire Department and Federal Fire Department, especially with both fire threatening properties, and has consumed a few structures.

In the case of the Hawai‘i Island fires, they are both burning in remote areas, with the Waikoloa fire consuming over 13,000 acres. 

The State of Hawai‘i could invest in a company (via public-private partnership) to man a few aircraft that could drop very large amounts of water to fight fires around the island chain. When not being used in Hawai‘i, the aircraft could be wet-leased to fight fires elsewhere.  The Kalaeloa Airport [JRF] would be a great place to park the aircraft, as space is dwindling at HNL.

OE-IGZ

Aircraft lessor AerCap is ferrying OE-IGZ (c/n 28258, l/n 1315), a 737-75C, from XMN to the mainland, following its lease expiration with Xiamen Air.

28258 was originally purchased by ILFC, and leased to Xiamen Air in May 2003 as B-5039. Sometime during 2012, it was painted in the current livery.

Shan Xi Airlines' B-5135

Our August edition of "HNLRareBirds Classic" goes back thirteen years to the delivery flight of Shan Xi Airlines' 737-84P, B-5135 (c/n 32603, l/n 1766).

B-5135 was delivered to Shan Xi Airlines, which is part of the Hainan Air Group in August 2005. A few months later, it was transferred to the Hainan Airlines fleet, but operated it for Shan Xi, and in July 2006, it was returned to Shan Xi, where it continues to fly today. In early 2011, it was painted in the 2007 Hainan red and yellow livery. At the end of 2017, it was painted in the current Hainan livery.

Lion Air's PK-LPT

Lion Air is taking delivery of PK-LPT (c/n 43210, l/n 7082) this evening. This 737-8GP is making its delivery from BFI as LNI2, and will make a fuel stop at HNL, then continue onto PNI.

Shanghai Airlines' B-2563

Shanghai Airlines is ferrying B-2563 (c/n 27309, l/n 546), a 767-36D, from PVG to MZJ (via SPN, HNL, and AVW) for storage, and is flying as CSH9765.

B-2563 was delivered to Shanghai Airlines in July 1994, and was withdrawn from service in June 2018.

Hainan Airlines' B-1100

N661JM

N661JM (msn 145730), an ERJ-135BJ Legacy, owned by SAS Aviation Holdings, LLC (Phoenix, AZ), has made a stop at HNL.

145730 was originally delivered to RedEye II, LLC in August 2003 as N730BH. It was sold to SAS Aviation Holdings in October 2014, and re-registered as N661JM in July 2015.

Aloha ‘Oe N592HA

Hawaiian Airlines has retired N592HA "Hunakai" (c/n 33468, l/n 898) today, and is ferrying this 767-3CBER to MCI as HAL9980. It will be acquired by United Airlines.

N592HA was delivered to Hawaiian in February 2003, and flew its last revenue flight this past Sunday as HAL36.

Jetgo Australia's VH-ZPT

Jetgo Australia's sole ERJ-190, VH-ZPT (msn 19000451), is ferrying from Clark Airbase, Philippines [CRK] to Nashville, TN [BNA], via Cairns Airport, Australia [CNS]; Darwin, Australia [DRW]; Malolo Lailai Airport, Fiji [PTF], Apia, Sāmoa [APW], HNL, and Van Nuys, CA [VNY] as VOZ9946. It's using a Virgin Australia flight crew to make the ferry flight.

VH-ZPT was originally delivered to Virgin Australia in August 2011, named "Little Beach", and flew until December 2017. Earlier this year, it went to Jetgo Australia [JG/JGO] as a wet-lease, however, the airline ceased operations at the end of May.

VP-CBE

VP-CBE (msn 1321), an A330-202, owned by Hongkong Jet, has made a stop at HNL from MNL. Because of it's long stay, and lack of parking spots, it has been parked on Taxiway F.

Makani Kai Air's N732LC

Makani Kai Air has taken delivery of N732LC (msn 208B1149). This C208B Grand Caravan is the fourth for the airline. It's owned by Iron Aviation LLC [Denton, TX], and is not known how long the lease will be.

Hawaiian Airlines' N213HA

Hawaiian Airlines is taking delivery of their second A321-271N in as many days, with N213HA "Lama" (msn 8237, f/n 213). It's making its delivery flight from XFW to PAE, via YYR as HAL9975.

Hawaiian Airlines' N214HA

Hawaiian Airlines is taking delivery of N214HA "Kukui" (msn 8157, f/n 214) today. This A321-271N is making its delivery flight from BFM to PAE as HAL9981.

Hawaiian Airlines Finalizes 787-9 Order

Hawaiian Airlines and Boeing finalized the airline's order for ten 787-9 Dreamliners, with an option for an additional ten aircraft. This solidifies the letter of intent that Hawaiian signed with Boeing this past March. Anticipated delivery of the first Dreamliner is in the first quarter of 2021.

This is the first new-build 737 that features the newer Chinese registration, that has three numbers followed by an alphabet. A few A320s have received this newer registry.

N226HY (msn 14501014), an Embraer ERJ135BJ "Legacy 600" owned by Blue Skies EL 600, LLC (Carle Place, NY), made a stop at HNL today.

N226HY was delivered to Blue Skies in November 2007, and is leased to Executive Flightways.

Hebei Airlines' B-1158

Hebei Airlines is taking delivery of B-1158 (c/n 42979, l/n 7036) today. This 737-8LW is making its delivery flight from BFI as HBH1158, and will overnight at HNL.

China Eastern Airlines' B-1256

China Eastern Airlines is taking delivery of B-1256 (c/n 61700, l/n 7034) today. This 737-89P is making its delivery flight from BFIa s CES2999, and will overnight at HNL.

Air New Zealand's ZK-OKI

Air New Zealand's latest 777-212ER, ZK-OKI (c/n 32336, l/n 422), made its first AKL-HNL flight today. The former Singapore Airlines "triple" still has the base livery of its previous life, which was 9V-SVL, delivered to Singapore Airlines in November 2002. This 777-212ER was acquired by Air New Zealand this past May to assist with alleviating traffic issues caused by the challenges with the airline's 787-9 engines.

Royal Jet's A6-RJV

Royal Jet's A6-RJV (c/n 62467, l/n 5564), a 737-77W BBJ, has made a stop at HNL. Royal Jet [ROJ] (United Arab Emirates) is a private charter service based in Abu Dhabi. According to flight trackers, it's flying as ROJ8, and arrived from LAX.

Airbus Re-designates The C-Series

Airbus has re-designated the Bombardier C-Series (CS100 and CS300) as the A220, as part of their takeover of the latter manufacturer's operation and program of the smaller narrow-body airliner. From today, the CS100 will now be known as the A220-100, and the larger CS300 will be known as the A220-300. The above photo was taken last year, when C-FFDO made a stopover at HNL on a demonstration flight.

Omega Tanker's N707MQ

Omega Tanker's 707-368C, N707MQ (c/n 23168, l/n 925), is being deployed to HNL, to participate in the 2018 RIMPAC naval and air exercise. It arrived from SBD as OME71.

Jiangxi Airlines' B-1269

Jiangxi Airlines is taking delivery of B-1269 (c/n 63689, l/n 7039) today. This 737-85C is making its its delivery flight from BFI as CJX8989, and will overnight at HNL.

China Southern Airlines' B-5126

China Southern Airlines is ferrying B-5126 (c/n 32613, l/n 1197) from CAN to MIA, via GUM, HNL, and LAX as CSN8685. This 737-83N is being returned to GECAS after its lease expired.

32613 was originally delivered to American Trans Air in November 2002 as N327TZ, leased from GECAS, until early 2006. In June of that year, it was leased to China Southern Airlines as B-5126. It was withdrawn from service two months ago.

China Southern Airlines' B-2051

China Southern Airlines is ferrying B-2051 (c/n 27357, l/n 20), a 777-21B from URC [Diwopu International Airport, Urumqi, China] to GWO, via CAN and HNL, as CSN8653. It was delivered to China Southern in December 1995. From February to April 2000, it was leased to Biman Bangladesh Airlines. B-2015 was withdrawn from service in May 2018, and stored at URC.

OE-IGN

OE-IGN (c/n 30656, l/n 1304), a 737-75C, is ferrying from XMN to the mainland, with a stop at HNL.

30656 was originally delivered to Xiamen Airlines in April 2003 as B-5038, leased from ILFC. In May 2014, it was acquired by AerCap, and continued with Xiamen Air. It was withdrawn from service in April 2018.

N378TP

N378TP (msn 19000559), an Embraer Lineage 1000 (ERJ-190), owned by ETPC Aviation LLC [Atlanta, GA], made a stop at HNL.

According to spotters in Sydney, Australia, N378TP arrived there a few days later.

VR-BLG

Our July edition of "HNL RareBirds Classic" goes back to May 1995, and this Douglas DC-8-62H, VR-BLG "Gypsy Queen" (c/n 46071, l/n 469), seen above taxing on Taxiway C. At the time, it was owned by Sunningdale Investments, and had a VIP interior.

46071 was originally delivered to United Airlines in July 1969 as N8970U "Mainliner Hilo Hattie". In the mid-1970s, it was painted in the livery designed by Saul Bass. In June 1984, it was leased to Arrow Air, and two months later sold to IAL, and leased back to United. In January 1985, N8970U was leased to Hawaiian Airlines. The airline bought the DC-8 in February 1986, then sold it to CIS Air Corporation, who leased it back to Hawaiian, a month later. It was sold to ICC and leased back in December 1986, then to Aerospace Finance LLC in April 1991. After it was returned to the lessor, this DC-8 had its cabin converted to a VIP layout, and in May 1991, leased to Australian Consolidated Press. It was operated by Santa Fe Aviation, and re-registered as VR-BMR in October 1991. Nine months later, it was acquired by Sunningdale Investments. In June 1997, it had Stage 3 Hush-Kits installed on its four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-7 engines, and re-registered as VP-BLG. In September 2001, it was sold to Cari Aviation Leasing Ltd, and leased to Jetline as P4-DCE "Samia". In October 2006, it was sold to the Republic of Togo as 5V-TGF, and continued as a VIP transport until October 2009, where it was placed into storage at Miami, FL. The fate of this DC-8-62H is unknown.

It sold back to ATR, and was ferried to TLS and stored. ‘Ohana by Hawaiian acquired this ATR42 in April 2018, ferried it to COE for painting and interior configuration, and will enter service operated by Empire Airlines.

N971NZ (c/n 25371, l/n 2196), a 737-4Q8F, is ferrying from Dothan, AL [DHN] to Auckland, New Zealand [AKL], via ONT, JRF, and PPG. It's being leased to Airwork NZ from AWAS, and is being ferried by Jet Test and Transport as JTN8120. The registration will be changed to ZK-PAU, after it arrives in New Zealand.

25371 was originally built for ILFC, and delivered to Cayman Airways in January 1992 as VR-CAA. In July 1993, it was leased to Carnival Airlines as N404KW. In May 1998, it was leased to Olympic Airways as SX-BKK, with a hybrid livery. In 2001, it was painted in the full Olympic livery. When Olympic re-branded as Olympic Airlines in 2003, SX-BKK was transferred over. In April 2006, it was leased to Sky Airlines [ZY/SHY] (Turkey) as TC-SKG "Gold", and painted in a special gold livery. In July 2013, it was sold to Ansett Worldwide (AWAS), and leased to Blue Air [0B/BMS] (Romania) as YR-BAR. It was returned to AWAS in December 2017, and ferried to DHN for freighter conversion.

Hillwood Airlines's N737AT

Hillwood Airways' [HWA] (Fort Worth, TX) N737AT (c/n 36756, l/n 2405), a 737-7HJC BBJ, is making a stop at HNL from AFW [Fort Worth, TX] as HWA170.

This BBJ has a quick-change layout to either fly cargo, or up to 94 passengers.

36756 was originally delivered to the US Department of Defense in December 2007 as N529PP, with the quick-change capability (similar to the US Navy's C-40Bs). In October 2014, it was re-registered as N737AT. It was sold to Hillwood Airways in July 2017.

Alaska Airlines Announces SMF-KOA Service

Alaska Airlines announced this morning that they commence thrice-weekly 737-890 service between  the Sacramento International Airport [SMF] and the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole [KOA] on 20 December 2018.

Armée de l'Air's F-RADA

F-RADA (msn 421), an Armé de l'Air A310-304, is making a stop at HNL today from PPT.

This A310-304 was originally delivered to Royal Jordanian in March 1987 as F-ODVD "Prince Hashem", leased from AFS. In November 1993, it was purchased by the Armée de l'Air as F-RADA, and the interior converted for VIPs.

Northern Air Cargo's N401YK

Northern Air Cargo's N401YK (c/n 25860, l/n 2545), a 737-436F, is flying to HNL from ANC (via OAK) as NAC401. It's being temporarily assigned to Aloha Air Cargo.

25860 was originally delivered to British Airways in December 1993 as G-BHVB. In April 1994, it was leased to EuroBelgian Airlines [BQ/EBA] as OO-LTS. From February to October 1996, it was sub-leased to Air Provence Charter [LPU] (France) as OO-LTS. It was returned to British Airways in October 1996, but was re-registered as G-GBTB, and flew with the airline until May 2015, when it was retired to VCV a few weeks later. Six months later, it was acquired by Automatic LLC, and stored at TPA. In May 2017, it was converted to a freighter, then leased to Northern Air Cargo a month later.

N937UW

N937UW (c/n 27245, l/n 630), a former American Airlines 757-2B7, is making its ferry flight from PHX to XSP (via HNL and SPN), for freighter conversion, as it will be leased to SF Airlines by Aircastle.

27245 was originally delivered to US Air in June 1994 as N624AU. It was part of the re-branding to US Airways in 1997. Ten years later, it was sold to Aircastle, then leased back as N937UW (f/n 937). In 2009, it had Blended Winglets installed. When US Airways was acquired by American Airlines, it was transferred into the latter's fleet, and flew until November 2017, where it was stored at GYR.

Hawaiian Airlines' N212HA

Hawaiian Airlines is taking delivery of their first A321-271N, N212HA "Wiliwili" (msn 8129), that was assembled at the Airbus North America's Final Assembly Center at Mobile, AL [BFM/KBFM]. It's making its delivery flight from BFM to PAE as HAL9973, for in-flight entertainment systems installation.
