Northern Air Cargo's N361NC Returns

Northern Air Cargo's N361NC (c/n 23260 l/n 1164) returned to Hawai‘i to work for sister-company Aloha Air Cargo. The 737-301FS first came to Hawai‘i in December 2013 to back fill Aloha Air Cargo's retirement of N841AL until their first 737-330F arrived.

Austrian Airways' OE-LPA

In what appears to be an around-the-world charter, Austrian Airways' OE-LPA (c/n 28698, l/n 87), made a stop at KOA today. The 777-2Z9ER arrived from MSY as AUA2911, and originated in ZRH. It's scheduled to depart for NRT on Monday, March 7th.

N463VX

N463VX (c/n 27632, l/n 2857), a 737-48E, is ferrying from GYR to PVG, with stops at OAK, HNL, MAJ, and GUM. It's owned by V63A-734 LLC (San Francisco, CA). FlightRadar24.com had it listed as a 737-48E(SF), but no cargo door cutout was visible. It will be converted into a freighter at PVG.

27632 was originally purchased by ILFC, and was leased to Asiana Airlines in February 1997 as HL7512. In June 2006, it was leased to Air One [AP/ADH] (Italy) as EI-DOV until November 2010. In June 2011, it was leased to Bluebird Airways [BBG] (Greece) as SX-TZE "Nikolas", until January 2016. It wore their original livery, as well as the current livery; and was also sold to AerCap in May 2014. After its lease expired, it was ferried to GYR for storage. V63A-734 LLC took ownership of this 737-48E on 12 February 2016.

Volga-Dnepr's RA-82079

Volga-Dnepr Airlines' RA-82079 (c/n 9773052062157, l/n 08-01) has made a stop at HNL as VDA1928. It arrived today from PDX, and will leave for POM tomorrow morning. On the upper fuselage, it's wearing a 25th Anniversary decal.

ATA's N187AT

Our March edition of "HNL RareBirds Classic" goes back to January 1998, with American Trans Air's (ATA) L-1011-385-1 Tristar 50, N871AT (msn 193C-1077), seen above taxiing on Taxiway RT to Runway 26L.

This Tristar was originally delivered to Delta Air Lines in May 1974 as N707DA, built as a Tristar 1. In March 1984, it was sold to Boeing, and was converted to a Tristar 50. In July 1985, American Trans Air took delivery of this L-1011 as N187AT. It flew with ATA until October 2001, where it was stored at VCV. It's been reported that this Tristar 50 was scrapped in November 2002.

Island Air To Discontinue LNY

Island Air announced today that they will discontinue service to LNY on March 31, 2016, as part of the restructuring of the airline.

Virgin Australia's VH-ZPG

Virgin Australia's VH-ZPG (msn 19000195) made a stop over in Honolulu on it's way to Nashville International Airport (BNA/KBNA) for routine maintenance work. "Glenelg Beach" arrived from Brisbane (BNE/YBBN) via Faleolo International (APW/NSFA) the previous night and will make one more stop in Van Nuys (VNY/KVNY) before arriving in Nashville.

China Eastern's B-7301

China Eastern Airlines is taking delivery of B-7301 (c/n 60162, l/n 5790) today. The 737-89P, leased from CDB Leasing, is making its delivery flight from BFI as CES9001, and will overnight at HNL.

N612AX

After another fire season in Australia, a 10 Tanker Air Carrier's specially converted DC10-30 is making it's way back to the mainland. N612AX (c/n 48290 l/n 435) arrived from Avalon, Victoria via Pago Pago last night, and departed for Albuquerque, New Mexico this morning.

Asia Pacific's N86425 Emergency Landing At GUM

Asia Pacific Airlines' 727-212F, N86425 (c/n 21459, l/n 1329), had to make a successful emergency landing at GUM today, after it's nose gear failed to deploy. None of the three aboard were injured.

N504BJ (c/n 60686, l/n 5129), a 737-82Z BBJ2, is making a flight from GED [Delaware Coastal Airport, Georgetown, DE] to JHB [Senai Interational Aiport, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia] (via EWR, LAX, HNL and SPN). It's been purchased by the Sultan of Johor, Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar. This BBJ2 will be registered as 9M-III.

Shanghai's B-7632

Shanghai Airlines is taking delivery of B-7632 (c/n 41816, l/n 5759) today. The 737-89P, allocated from China Eastern Airlines' order book, is making its delivery flight from BFI as CSH556, and will overnight at HNL.

China United's B-7561

China United Airlines is taking delivery of B-7561 (c/n 61681, l/n 5758) today. The 737-89P, allocated from China Eastern Airlines, is making its delivery flight from BFI as CUA561, and will overnight at HNL.

Signature Flight Support Moves In

Signature Flight Support has taken over the Landmark Aviation compound at 98 Kapalulu Place. The former bought out the latter in September 2015, and the deal was finalized on February 8th. Signature also took over the Landmark facilities at LIH, OGG, LNY, ITO, and KOA.

Air Niugini Orders 737 MAX8s

Air Niugini [PX/ANG] (New Guinea) placed an order for four 737 MAX8s during the Singapore Air Show, with deliveries beginning in 2020.

N80918 Crashes In Pearl Harbor

N80918 (msn 2687), a Bell 206 Jet Ranger owned by Genesis Helicopters with five aboard, went down in Pearl Harbor, at the water's edge of the Arizona Memorial Visitor Center. One of the passengers was critically injured, and among three that were hospitalized.

News outlets report that the critically-injured passenger passed away today.

N80918 was previously with Manulele Aviation (in this 2011 photo), and served as the news helicopter for the state's NBC affiliate, KHNL, and commonly referred to as "Chopper 8".

Philippine Airlines New Long-Haul Plans

Philippine Airlines announced that they have placed an order with Airbus for six A350-900XWBs (with an option for six more). The announcement was made at the Singapore Air Show. As the A350-900s enter the fleet in 2018 and 2019, the airline will retire their aging A340-300s.

Okay Airways Boeing Order

Okay Airways has committed to purchasing 12 Boeing 737s at an announcement made at the Singapore Air Show. The order will comprise of eight MAX 8s, three MAX 9s, and a -900ER; plus an option for eight more MAX 8s. Okay Airways is the first Chinese carrier to order the MAX 9.

Myanmar's XY-ALF

Myanmar National Airlines is taking delivery of XY-ALF (c/n 43411, l/n 5773) today. The 737-86N, leased from GECAS, is making its delivery flight from BFI (with a stop at YVR), as UBA737, and will overnight at HNL.

Sirwijaya Air's PK-CKN

A Sirwijaya Air 737-4Q8 is being returned to it's lessor, AerCap, in the mainland. PK-CKN "Sukacita" (c/n 26281, l/n 2380) arrived last night from Jakarta via Majuro.

26281 was originally purchased by ILFC, and leased to Carnival Airlines [KW/CAA] in October 1992 as N401KW. In July 1998, it was leased to Olympic Airways as SX-BKN, and when the airline re-organized, and re-branded, five years later as Olympic Airlines, this 737-4Q8 was transferred. In July 2010, it was leased to BremenFly [8B/BFY] as D-ABRF. In November 2011, it was leased to Sriwijaya Air as PK-CKN.

N730MM

N730MM (msn 19000632), an Embraer Lineage 1000 (E190-100 ECJ), owned by Mirage Resorts, Inc. (Las Vegas, NV) has stopped off at HNL. This Lineage 1000 was recently delivered to Mirage Resorts this past December.

Mokulele Bids For SoCal EAS Contract

Mokulele Airlines is bidding for an Essential Air Service (EAS) contract for VIS [Visalia, CA] and IPL [Imperial County Airport, El Centro, CA], against two other carriers. If awarded, Mokulele would allocate a few of their Cessna Grand Caravans for the operation.

Island Air Sale Approved

The Department of Transportation approved the majority share sale of Island Air by its holding company, ‘Ohana Airline Holdings (OAH), to PacifiCap. OAH will have a minority share and role. Former Island Air executives Les Murashige and Rob Maraucher will lead the transition team. The airline will also restore service to LIH, and acquire another ATR72.

United's Broncos Logo Jet

The United Airlines 767-424ER wearing the orange United titles and Denver Broncos logo, N76064 (c/n 29459, l/n 873, f/n 0064), made a stop at HNL from EWR as UAL15 today. This was the team charter jet for the 2015-16 NFL Super Bowl 50 Champions, that brought them to and from SJC. The team's hashtag for the road to Super Bowl was "#UnitedInOrange".

N76064 will continue to SFO tomorrow as UAL72, and return to HNL as UAL73, then to EWR as UAL14.

Thai Lion's HS-LUO

Thai Lion Air is taking delivery of HS-LUO (c/n 39879, l/n 5763) today. The 737-8GP is making its delivery flight from BFI as TLM1, and will make a brief fuel stop at HNL, before making a non-stop leg to DMK.

HPD's N92BK

The Honolulu Police Department acquired its second MD500 helicopter, N92BK (msn 0572E). This will be the third helicopter for the police department, along with N501HP and N504HP.

Hainan's B-7172

Hainan Airlines is taking delivery of B-7172 (c/n 60689, l/n 5762) today. The 737-86N, leased from GECAS, is making its delivery flight from BFI as CHH7172, and will overnight at HNL.

N22DG Ditches In Ke‘ehi Lagoon

N22DG (msn 33701932), a Cessna 337H Super Skymaster, ditched in Ke‘ehi Lagoon, after experiencing landing gear issues. The Super Skymaster, piloted by a 68-year-old Australian man, and was the lone person aboard, suffered no injuries. N22DG is registered to Mark Jones of Honolulu.

Virgin Australia is ferrying VH-ZPD to BNA from BNE, via APW, HNL, and VNY. It's making its flight as VOZ9901, and will overnight at HNL.

Virgin America Announces LAX Service

Virgin America announced today that they will launch daily A320 service from LAX to HNL on May 5, 2016; and service between LAX and OGG on June 14, 2016.

Our February edition of "HNL RareBirds Classic" goes back to August 2005, with N745AP (c/n 21767, l/n 585), a 737-281/Adv, seen above, taxiing out for departure to MAJ, on its ferry flight to Indonesia to join the Metro Batavia [7P/BTV] fleet.

This 737-281/Adv was originally delivered to All Nippon Airways in July 1979, as JA8453. In September 1992, it was leased to its Air Nippon subsidiary. It was sold to Westjet Airlines in September 2000, and registered as C-FTWJ. 21767 was sold to Wells Fargo Bank Northwest in June 2005, then sold two months later to Metro Batavia as PK-YTQ. In May 2006, it was damaged in a runway overrun incident at CGK, after experiencing hydraulic issues, and was last seen a year later in storage without titles.

N934NZ

Toll Airwork is taking delivery of N934NZ (c/n 24434, l/n 1912), a 737-476F. It's traveling from DHN to BNE, via OAK, HNL, and PPG.

24434 was originally delivered to Australian Airlines in September 1990 as VH-TJI. It was leased to Malaysian Airlines as 9M-MLD in October 1990, for two years. It was also leased to Air Vanuatu from November 1992 to March 1998. A month later, it joined the Qantas fleet, and named "Cloncurry". It flew for Qantas until February 2014, and was ferried to VCV. After it was converted to a freighter at DHN late last year, it was sold to Toll Airwork.

Air Vanuatu's YV-AV8

Air Vanuatu is taking delivery of YV-AV8 (c/n 42052, l/n 5750) today. The 737-8SH is making its delivery flight from BFI as AVN7116, and will overnight at KOA instead of HNL.

Hainan's B-7171

Hainan Airlines is taking delivery of B-7171 (c/n 60688, l/n 5731) today. The 737-86N, leased from GECAS, is making its delivery flight from BFI as CHH7171, and will overnight at HNL.

Xiamen's B-7178

Xiamen Air is taking delivery of B-7178 (c/n 40958, l/n 5756) today. The 737-85C is making its delivery flight from BFI as CXA7178, and will overnight at HNL. This is the airline's third 737-85C delivery within the past seven days. It's also wearing a commemorative decal noting that this is the 8,888th 737 built. The number eight is symbolic for the Chinese, as it is the number for prosperity.

Air China's second of two 737-89L delivery flights today is B-7182 (c/n 44911, l/n 5725). It's making its delivery flight from BFI as CCA78, and will overnight at HNL.

Air China's B-7180

Air China is delivering a pair of 737-89Ls from BFI today. B-7180 (c/n 43410, l/n 5746), the first of the two, is making its delivery flight as CCA74, and will overnight at HNL.

Hawaiian And Turkish Codeshare

Hawaiian Airlines and Turkish Airlines have entered into a codeshare agreement, where the latter carrier will add their THY flight code to the former's KIX and ICN flights.

The Lion Group announced that the Malindo Air brand will be re-branded as Batik Air Malaysia, as it moves to become a full-service airline, like its Indonesian sister airline.

Donghai's B-5047

Donghai Airlines is ferrying B-5047 (c/n 24278, l/n 1660) from SZX to the mainland. The 737-341SF is making a stop at HNL.

24278 was originally delivered to Varig in December 1988 as PP-VOG. It was painted in the last Varig livery in 2000. GECAS purchased 24276 in September 2003, and converted to a freighter. In December 2003, it was sold to China Postal Airlines as B-5046. In 2008, it was painted as logo jet for EMS - Express Mail Service. Donghai Airlines acquired B-5046 in June 2010.

Alaska Airlines Re-Brands

Today, Alaska Airlines revealed its first major re-branding in the past 25 years. The airline unveiled one of their 737-890s, N563AS (c/n 35180, l/n 2090), before a large group of airline employees at their SEA headquarters. Alaska's airport locations will also see the re-brand over the next several months, as well.

KOA To Be The Next International Hub

In Hawai‘i Governor David Ige's State of the State address, he noted that he intends to designate KOA as the next major international destination airport in the state, through Capital Improvement Program funding. KOA's current international flight is by Westjet Airlines from YVR.

Japan Airlines conducted non-stop in-bound flights from NRT to KOA between 1996 and October 2010 with 747s and DC-10s, with return flight stopping over at HNL. In recent years, Hawaiian Airlines has made several applications for non-stop flights between KOA and HND in response to disputes with gate slots by other American carriers; to date however all of these applications have been denied and awarded to competitor airlines.

Governor Ige said he will also seek funding to modernize the passport control system for HNL, as well as general modernization for Hawai‘i airports.

China Southern's B-2838

In a sales agreement between Boeing and China Southern Airlines, three 737-300s, and the 13 remaining 757-200s owned by China Southern will be bought back by Boeing. The buy-back of older airframes comes along with the news that China Southern has purchased 30 more 737-700/800s and 50 737 MAXs.

B-2838 (c/n 27260, l/n 613) arrived this afternoon from Macau [MFM] to VCV, via GUM and HNL, as CSN2005. The 21-year-old 757-2Z0 was delivered to China Southern Airlines back in May 2nd, 1994.

N599GL

N599GL (c/n 27384, l/n 2673), a former Malaysia Airlines 737-4H6, is ferrying from BKI [Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia] to the mainland. It's owned by Onix Trade Corp (Miami, FL), and is making a stop from MAJ.

27384 was delivered to Malaysia Airlines in December 1994 as 9M-MQK. In April 1998, it was leased to Shaheen Air for seven months. It was acquired by Onix Trade Corp in October 2015.

Atlas Air To Acquire Southern Air

AirCargoNews.net is reporting that Atlas Air's parent company, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings will acquire rival Southern Air Holdings.

Hawaiian and jetBlue Expand Codeshare

Hawaiian Airlines announced that they, and jetBlue Airlines are expanding their codeshare agreement, that will result in further routes that Hawaiian will have the JBU flight code associated with Neighbor Island service, as HAL flight codes on jetBlue's mainland network, where the two airlines have the same destination.

Ex-Qantas N207CR

A 767-338ER formerly belonging to Qantas Airways flew its way out of the desert in Victorville, California today. It's making its way to QPG for freighter conversion.

N207CR (c/n 29118, l/n 713) was delivered to Qantas on August 4th, 1998 as VH-OGU, and named "Byron Bay". It flew with Qantas until the entire fleet of their 767s was retired in favor of A330s in December 2014. "Byron Bay" will join China-based cargo carrier SF Airlines, along with 4 other ex-Qantas sister-ships (VH-OGP, VH-OGQ, VH-OGR, VH-OGT) as converted freighters.

China Eastern's B-7375

China Eastern Airlines is taking delivery of B-7375 (c/n 41482, l/n 5720) today. The 737-89P is making its delivery flight from BFI as CES9001, and will overnight at HNL.

12 Marines From MCAF Kāne‘ohe Bay Missing

12 Marines aboard two Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallions are missing after the two helicopters collided off of Hale‘iwa last night. The Marines and the helicopters are from the 463rd Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH-463) / 1st Marine Air Wing (MAW) at MCAF Kāne‘ohe Bay. Debris has been spotted a few miles offshore, and many agencies are participating in the search. The thoughts and prayers of the entire HNL RareBirds team goes out to all those involved in this incident.

WestJet Starts Own 767 Operations to Hawai‘i

WestJet Airlines started their seasonal 767-338ER operations to Hawaii‘ this past Sunday from Canada. C-FOGJ  (c/n 25274, l/n 396) is one of four ex-Qantas 767-388ERs that WestJet acquired to add capacity for it's Hawai‘i network. They also plan to expand to Europe and Jamaica later this year with their 767s.

Omni Air International 767-200s were wet-leased in the beginning of this winter season until Westjet's own 767-338ERs completed ETOPS certifications.

Hawaiian Air Reveals Maui Expansion

USA Today reports the Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley revealed to the Maui Chamber of Commerce that the airline intends to expand operations at OGG in the near future, as it will begin receiving A321neos in 2017. With 16 of the new engine version of the A321, Dunkerley said that Hawaiian will expand more mainland flights from OGG, and other Neighbor Island airports to the US west coast, along with routes from HNL to smaller markets.

On another note, Hawaiian will return to JHM with their ‘Ohana by Hawaiian subsidiary, once the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation installs Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights on JHM's Runway 2/20, and certified by the FAA. No launch date was given.

Lion Air's PK-LPO

Lion Air's PK-LPO (c/n 39876, l/n 5726) is the first 737NG delivery flight to stop through HNL for 2016. The 737-8GP is making its delivery flight from BFI as LNI1, and will make a brief fuel stop before continuing onto PNI.

JA8943

Japan Airlines is ferrying JA8943 (c/n 28395, l/n 196) from HND to SBD, with a stop at HNL, for storage (and eventual parting out and scrapping). The 777-346 has been painted all-white.

JA8943 was originally delivered to JAL in February 1999 in the Landor livery. It was painted in the "Arc of the Sun" livery in 2005, and the current livery in 2012.

PacifiCap To Acquire Island Air

The Honolulu Star*Advertiser is reporting that two PacifiCap affiliates will be purchasing a controlling share of Island Air from Larry Ellison, a week after the sale was announced. Included in the article, is a plan to add a sixth ATR72.

Delta To Switch SEA Flights To 737-932ERs

World Airline News and Airline Route are reporting that Delta Air Lines will switch aircraft types for their SEA-HNL (DAL2210), and SEA-KOA (DAL1287 / 1350) flights in April. The airline will go from their 757-200s to their 737-932ERs. No word was given if the current 757-200 service between SEA and OGG (DAL1397 / 1768) will be affected.

2-TBXH

2-TBXH (msn 540), an A320-232, formerly with Sichuan Airlines [3U/CSC] (China), is making its ferry flight from CAN to GYR (via GUM and HNL), as it's being returned to its lessor. It's scheduled to make a brief fuel stop at HNL.

540 was originally purchased by ILFC, and leased to Sichuan Airlines in December 1995 as B-2340. From July 2008 to June 2010, it was sub-leased to United Eagle Airlines [EU/UEA] (China), wearing a hybrid livery. In May 2014, ILFC sold this A320 to AerCap, and the lease with Sichuan continued until this past month, where B-2340 was withdrawn from service to be returned to AerCap.

Virgin Australia's VH-ZPA

Virgin Australia is ferrying VH-ZPA "Apollo Beach" (msn 19000148) from BNE to BNA (via APW, HNL, and VNY) for maintenance. The E190 is making the flight as VOZ9901, and will overnight at HNL.

Delta's N722DA

Our January 2016 edition of "HNL RareBirds Classic" goes back to January 2005, with this former Delta Air Lines L-1011-385-1 TriStar 1, N722DA (msn 193C-1147), that made a stop at HNL on its way to BKK to join the Thai Sky Airlines fleet as HS-AXA.

N722DA was delivered to Delta in November 1977 from the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, CA, and served with the airline until October 1998, where it was placed into storage at VCV. It was sold to Jet Midwest in April 2004, then J&J Holdings (Hong Kong) seven months later. It made a ferry flight from VCV to CAN (via OAK and HNL) for an overhaul. It joined the Thai Sky Airlines in February 2005, but was withdrawn from use in April 2006, and was stripped for spare parts. It's assumed that this TriStar has been scrapped.
